How to release tight shoulders

Four things you can do at your desk right now, and the reason they keep coming back no matter how many massages you book.

Before you read on

A quick body check

Right now, while you are reading this.

Where are your shoulders? Are they creeping up towards your ears? Is your jaw clenched? When did you last take a breath that actually reached your belly?

That is not bad posture. That is bracing.

If you only want the four releases, they are here. If you want to know why your shoulders keep going back to it, keep reading.

The thing nobody names

Your body is holding on

Bracing is your body holding itself tight against pressure. All day, every day. And it has been doing it so long that you no longer feel yourself doing it.

It is not a decision and it is not weakness. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it is built to do under sustained load: tighten up, stay ready, do not let go.

The problem is that it was designed for short bursts. Not for months.

Where stress actually sits

Stress does not just live in your head

It is stored physically, in your fascia.

Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps every muscle, organ and nerve in your body. It is not a series of separate sleeves, it is one continuous web running head to toe, which is why a tight hip can show up as a sore neck and why nothing in the body is really local.

Under sustained pressure, that web grips. That is your tight shoulders. Your stiff lower back. Your jaw. Your tension headaches.

Releasing tension through the neck and shoulders in a fascia class at Sound of Soma, Windsor
Neck, shoulders, jaw, lower back. The same four places, on almost everybody.

The answer you came for

This is why your massage never lasts

The massage works on the tissue. And it works, genuinely. You walk out looser than you went in.

But the grip is not coming from the tissue. It is coming from your nervous system, and your nervous system walked out of that appointment still braced.

Nothing told it the pressure was off. So over the next few days it quietly puts the tension back, because as far as it is concerned the tension was doing a job. By Wednesday everything is exactly where it was, and you book another massage.

You are not failing to hold the release. You are treating the tissue and leaving the instruction in place.

The class that does both halves runs weeknights in Windsor, from $35.

What actually works

Two things have to happen together

To release held tension so that it stays released:

  • The tissue has to let go. Slow, specific work into the fascia, rather than force.
  • Your nervous system has to get the message that it is safe to stop bracing. Otherwise it simply rebuilds what you just undid.

Do the first without the second and you get Friday-to-Wednesday. Do them in the same hour and the letting-go has a reason to hold.

The second half is not mystical. It is the shift from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest, and sustained low-frequency sound is one of the most reliable ways to get there without effort. The full mechanism is in the science of a sound bath.

Right now, at your desk

How to release tight shoulders, in four moves

None of this replaces the class. It is here so you can feel the principle rather than take my word for it.

  • Unclench your jaw. Let your back teeth come apart. Rest your tongue on the floor of your mouth rather than the roof. Breathe out slowly. Most people hold more in the jaw than anywhere else and never notice until it lets go.
  • Shrug hard, then drop. Pull both shoulders up towards your ears as hard as you can. Hold for five seconds. Then let them fall. Your body releases a held position more easily if you take it further first, rather than trying to relax down from it.
  • Lengthen one side of the neck. Drop your right ear towards your right shoulder. Rest your right hand on the left side of your head, no pulling, just the weight of the hand. Take three slow breaths. Swap sides.
  • Take one breath that reaches your belly. Hand on your stomach. Breathe in so the hand moves out, not so your chest rises. Long slow exhale. If that felt hard, that is the information.

Your shoulders came down while you were reading this, did they not? That is how fast the body responds when someone simply points it out. Now imagine an hour of it, with someone who knows exactly where to look.

What we run

Fascia release and sound

Jack guides you through slow, simple fascial maneuvers that you do yourself, on a mat. He trained in the method with Human Garage. There is nothing to keep up with, nothing performed at the front of the room, and no experience needed.

Then the sound comes in, and settles your nervous system while your body locks in the release. That is the half a massage table cannot give you.

People walk out looser than they have felt in months. And because you did the releases yourself, the techniques are yours to keep and use at home on the bad weeks.

The second half. Tissue first, then the instruction to stop bracing.

Classes run weeknight evenings at our Windsor studio, from $35. Less than a third of what the massage cost, and it is meant to be the last one you need for a while rather than the first of twelve.

Honestly

Is this for you?

  • You have had massage after massage and it never holds. This is the whole reason the class exists.
  • Your shoulders, neck or jaw are permanently tight. The three places bracing shows up first.
  • You get tension headaches. Often the jaw and the base of the skull rather than the head itself.
  • You sit at a desk most of the day. Held positions plus low-grade stress is the exact recipe.
  • You have never done anything like this. Most of the room has not. Nothing is demonstrated fast and nothing has to be kept up with.

Have a word with your doctor first if you are pregnant, recovering from recent surgery, or managing an acute injury. Tell us on the way in and we will adjust what you do.
