Who it's for

Come along if any of this sounds like you:

  • Stress and anxiety that won't switch off, however tired you are.
  • Trouble sleeping - or sleeping through the night and still waking up flat.
  • Burnout and mental exhaustion from carrying too much for too long.
  • Grief, heaviness or emotional overwhelm you can't quite talk your way through.
  • Tension and pain that has settled into the body and stayed there.
  • Feeling foggy, flat or disconnected from yourself.
  • Or you simply want an hour of the deepest rest you can get.

No experience needed. You lie down - the sound does the rest.

The experience

What happens

1

You lie down and get comfortable.

Warm low light, a mat, a bolster under your knees, a blanket over you. There is nothing to learn and nothing to keep up with — you settle in and close your eyes.

2

The sound builds around you.

Crystal singing bowls, Himalayan bowls, chimes and voice, played live and layered with looping so the sound moves through the whole room. You hear it, and you feel it move through your body.

3

You drop into deep rest.

Somewhere in the first fifteen minutes the thinking slows down. Your body shifts out of fight-or-flight and into rest, and stays there. We bring you back slowly at the end — most people are surprised an hour has gone.

Questions

Do I need any experience?

None at all. This is the easiest class we run — you lie down, we do the rest. It is a good first experience of anything like this.

What does it actually feel like?

Different for everyone. Most people describe heaviness and warmth, then a floaty, dreamlike state somewhere between awake and asleep. Some see colour, some feel emotion move, some just sleep. All of it is fine.

What if I fall asleep?

Then you needed the sleep. Your body still receives the sound, and rest is rest — nobody minds, and you won't be the only one.

What should I wear or bring?

Something warm and comfortable — your body temperature drops as you settle. Mats, bolsters and blankets are all provided. If you like an eye pillow or eye mask, bring your own.

When should I arrive?

10–15 minutes early. Doors lock 5 minutes after we begin so the room stays undisturbed.

What is the difference between a sound bath and sound healing?

They describe the same experience. "Sound bath" refers to being bathed in the sound; "sound healing" or "sound therapy" refers to what it is doing for your body and nervous system. Our classes are both.

Is a sound bath the same as meditation?

It gets you to the same place with none of the effort. In a seated meditation you are working to quiet the mind; in a sound bath the frequencies do it for you while you lie down. It is the easiest way into a meditative state we know of.

Where are you in Melbourne?

5/1A Windsor Place, Windsor VIC 3181 — just off Chapel Street, a short walk from Windsor Station and minutes from Prahran, South Yarra and St Kilda.

Is there anyone it isn't suitable for?

If you are pregnant, have epilepsy, a pacemaker, or any serious medical condition, text us before booking and we'll talk it through with you.

How it works

Three levels of healing

Singing bowl played over a guest in deep rest at Sound of Soma

Sound is vibration. You hear it through your ears — but you also feel it move through you, and your body responds to that far faster than to being told to relax.

That is the whole principle behind sound healing. And the effects are measurable:

  • Less tension, anxiety and low mood — measured after a single singing-bowl session.
  • Lower heart rate, better heart-rate variability — the clearest markers of a nervous system leaving stress.
  • Brainwaves shift toward alpha and theta — the slow rhythms of deep meditation.

The body

You are seventy per cent water, and vibration travels through water beautifully. The frequencies soften muscle and fascia, the breath deepens, and the nervous system drops out of fight-or-flight into the rest state where the body does its repair work.

The mind

Long, steady tones give a busy brain one simple thing to follow. Thinking slows toward the rhythms of deep meditation — with none of the effort. This is why sound works for people who have decided they are "bad at meditating".

The energy field

Stress, grief and long-held tension leave your field feeling heavy, flat or scattered. Sustained harmonic sound moves through and rebalances it — why people leave lighter and clearer without being able to say exactly what shifted.

All three in a single session — which is why even your first class can change how you sleep that night.

The benefits

What people notice

Sound frequency from a singing bowl moving through the body and energy field

Every body responds in its own order, but these are the changes people tell us about most, from the first session onward:

  • Deeper sleep, often from the very first night. The most commonly reported change of all.
  • Less stress and anxiety, with studies measuring real drops in tension and low mood after a single singing-bowl session.
  • Physical tension releasing from the neck, shoulders, jaw and back, without anything being touched.
  • Emotional release, grief and heaviness moving without needing to talk it through.
  • A clearer, quieter mind, focus and decisions coming easier for days afterwards.
  • A calmer baseline with regular sessions, less reactive, steadier, harder to knock off centre.

What to expect

Your first session — and what comes after

1

Your first session.

Expect a busy mind — and know that it's completely normal. An active mind in your first sound bath isn't you doing it wrong; it's your nervous system processing a backlog it finally has space to work through. That IS the session working. You might drift, you might not — either way you'll walk out noticeably calmer, and most people sleep deeper that night than they have in a long time.

2

Sessions two and three.

Your body starts to recognise the room, the blankets, the first notes — and drops in much faster. The mind quietens earlier, the rest goes deeper, and the calm starts lasting days instead of hours. This is usually where sleep and mood begin to properly shift.

3

When it becomes regular.

This is where it compounds. With a session most weeks, your baseline changes: stress stops accumulating faster than it releases, the reactive edge softens, sleep steadies, and the deep-rest state becomes somewhere your body knows how to go on its own. People around you tend to notice before you do.

Make it a rhythm

Once feels amazing. Weekly changes things.

Nervous systems don't transform in one visit — they respond to repetition. That's why the people who come weekly are the ones whose sleep changes for good.

Ange Monitto

Founder & Sound Practitioner

Ange healed his own undiagnosed chronic illness through sound after Western medicine ran out of answers — and built Sound of Soma so other people wouldn't have to go looking as long as he did.

He leads the RELAX and RECHARGE classes and shares RESTORE with Jack, working with crystal and Himalayan bowls and live looping to take a room into deep rest.

Jack Lawton

Sound & Somatics Practitioner
